Dave Bodymore: TNA 15/09/13

Dave Bodymore

I was looking forward to this week’s episode of Impact for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that it’s the first one I get to write about for Lockup and the second reason is that this week’s episode looked like it had the potential to be a very good one.

This weeks Impact was the latest in the themed episodes, with this week’s theme being ‘No Surrender.’ With that theme in mind the World Heavyweight title match was fittingly made a Last Man Standing match in the opening segment, in which Bully Ray offered Mr. Anderson the chance to apologise, Hogan repeated the same line twice and Anderson punched Bully Ray to reject his offer.

The episode opened with the semi-finals of the Bound For Glory series. The first match between A.J. Styles and Austin Aries was good but not as good as I had hoped it would be. Styles won with a second rope Styles Clash meaning he was through to the finals of the tournament. The second semi-final was contested between Bobby Roode and Magnus. This match was better than the first match and Magnus got the win with a quick pin.

The third match was the Last Man Standing Word Heavyweight title match. This was a hard fought brawl, with most of the fighting occurring outside the ring. Referee Earl Hebner was attacked by Bully Ray towards the end of the match which saw the rest of the Aces & Eights come to the ring. Garrett Bischoff, Knux and Wes Brisco picked up Mr. Anderson only for Brooke Tessmacher to give him a low blow. The match itself was ok, with Bully Ray retaining the title; however the aftermath was slightly OTT. Before discussing what happened I would like to point out the TNA’s ‘medical staff’ placed Anderson in a neck brace and then dragged him from a broken table by his feet! Now we all know that in these situations the ‘medical staff’ are not real paramedics, however don’t rub this in our noses! It grates on me when TNA do things like that! Anyway back to the match, post-match Bully Ray pushed Anderson off the stretcher and hit him with a piledriver on the stage. Anderson had already taken a beating and I did feel that this was just overkill in the end.

The last match of the night was the final of the BFG series. Styles vs Magnus was a really good match, with the exception of the run in by Roode and Bad Influence, and was definitely Match of the Night. Styles got the win with the Spiral Tap meaning that the winner of this year’s Bound For Glory series is A.J. Styles!

I am pleased that Styles has won the series as I don’t think that Magnus is quite at the level required for the main event yet. However I do think that Styles was made the winner to try and get him to resign a long term contract with TNA. With that being said Styles vs Bully Ray, if he is still champ, at Bound For Glory should be really entertaining.

So overall this weeks Impact was a little bit of a let-down. I can’t say I am surprised that a TNA show let me down but I am disappointed by it. Next week we have Manik vs Jeff Hardy and Chavo Guerrero & Hernandez vs Storm & Gunner to look forward to.
